First impressions of the Broil King Gem 310 Grill
A family-owned company from Canada, Broil King has been in the barbecue business for over 40 years. It’s proud to deliver top-quality barbecues for every budget.
The gas grill range alone offers several options, varying in price and size. In this comparison post, we’ve pitted one of its biggest alternatives against
The Broil King Gem 310 is the company’s affordable, entry-level option. In fact, it made our list of best gas grills under $500.
We were surprised by how much we enjoyed cooking on the Broil King Gem 310. Designed for smaller spaces, it still includes the best Broil King features. We’re talking about 400-plus square inches of cooking space, quick and easy electronic ignition, and foldable side shelves.

What I like:
- Searing machine: My favorite feature is the great sear marks this propane grill produces.
- Storage: The two drop-down side shelves with tool hooks are extremely handy.
- Movability: With two large wagon wheels and coming in at under 70 lbs, this grill is very easy to move around.
What I don’t like:
- Small numbers on the temperature gauge: My one small complaint is that the built-in temperature gauge needs bigger numbers.
Unboxing and setup
Like most gas grills, this Broil King Gem 310 was packaged well. The hardest part of this assembly was putting the storage cabinet together. Thankfully, there weren’t many parts, so it took less than 30 minutes for two of us to assemble it.
Build quality
This propane gas grill features a fully rust-proof Therma-Cast™ aluminum cookbox. It’s dressed up a little with a stainless steel wrap over the lid and a powder-coated epoxy paint finish. It’s solid, feels sturdier, and is better built than expected for a grill at this price point.

Moving it around with two peg legs and two large, crack-proof wagon wheels is easy. Plus, it weighs in at just shy of 70 lbs. It’s also 21 inches wide, 42.6 inches high, and 45.3 inches deep.
Cooking performance
The Broil King Gem 310 Grill has a total cooking area of 426 square inches. That’s 294 square inches of main cooking space and 132 square inches on the chrome-coated warming rack. The porcelain-coated cast iron main cooking grate produces epic crosshatch grill marks.
The Sure-lite™ electronic ignition system lit immediately. During the burnoff, we reached temperatures above 750°F. That’s because the three stainless steel tube burners push 24,000 BTUs in the small chamber.
The three adjustable, precise, linear-flow valves give users much more control over each burner. Enjoy the flexibility of creating hotter and cooler zones for grilling different types of food.
My Burnt Toast Test exemplified this. The inside toast was more done than the ones on either side. So, I reserve the sides for indirect cooking or my holding zone as required.
While there’s a built-in Deluxe Accu-Temp™ temperature gauge, I personally found the smaller numbers hard to read. The eyes don’t work as good as they used to!
I’ve cooked several things on the Broil King Gem 310 Gas Grill. Its combination of three burners, high BTUs, and a small grill surface makes it a searing machine.
It gets nice and hot to grill some quick chicken wings. It can also produce some awesome-looking crosshatch grill marks on your steak.

If you’re wondering about the size, it’s perfect for small to medium-sized families. I had no problem grilling six good-sized pork chops simultaneously.
Storage
The grill includes two durable resin drop-down side shelves, each with two integrated tool hooks. Foldable shelves make the grill even smaller if you need to store it in tight spaces between cooks.
There’s also a powder-coated bottom cabinet for storing your propane tank. Note that you can’t fit much else in there, though.

Cleaning
Broil King has a comprehensive cleaning guide with helpful tips. But there’s a removable grease tray accessible from the barbecue’s rear. The porcelain-coated cast iron cooking grate also makes for easy cleanup.
Accessories
Broil King offers an extensive range of accessories, including an exact-fit grill cover. Grill toppers, such as a flat topper, a wok topper, and a roaster basket, are also available. With these, you can create an entire meal in one go!
Alternatives to consider
As mentioned, the Broil King Gem 310 made our list of the best gas grills under $500. Its closest competitors include:
- Monument Mesa 415BZ. This full-sized, budget grill with four burners, a dedicated sear zone, and a side burner comes out on top. With 630 square inches of cooking space, two side shelves, and a large storage cabinet, it’s hard to beat.
- Weber Spirit II E-210. If you’re a
Weber fan, this solidly built two-burner gas grill is the most comparable. It also offers the same amount of storage. - Char-Broil American Gourmet Classic 3-Burner. The Char-Broil is a more affordable three-burner alternative.
Wrapping it up
I thoroughly enjoy cooking on the impressive Broil King Gem 310 Gas Grill. It’s convenient yet compact, which means this little grill is perfect for anyone with limited storage space or a small deck.
Don’t worry, though, as there’s enough cooking space for everyone to get something for dinner. Coming in at under $500, there’s nothing not to like.
