The Solo Stove Pi is a portable, gas-fired pizza oven designed for outdoor use. This oven is perfect for anyone who loves pizza and wants to take their outdoor cooking to the next level. With its compact size and easy set-up, the Solo Stove Pi is perfect for camping trips, picnics, and backyard parties.

The model I tested allows you to use wood or propane. This gives you options for more wood fired flavor or convenience with propane.

Design and build

The Solo Stove Pi looks much like their Solo Stove Bonfire, which has gained a lot of popularity recently. It has a compact and portable design. It is made of stainless steel and is lightweight and easy to transport. It looks sleek, and it is very easy to use.

What does it come with?

You can get the Pi oven with dual fuel capability and a Cordierite Pizza Stone, and Solo Stove has also put together two different bundles to make sure you don’t forget any of the other pizza oven accessories you need to get started.

  • The Starter Bundle includes the Pi pizza oven, infrared thermometer, pizza peel, and pizza cutter.
  • The Essentials Bundle includes everything from the starter bundle as well as the shelter and turning peel. All of these are a much welcome addition and accessories you do not often get with many other ovens on the market.

I would highly recommend the starter bundle, as it literally has everything you need but the pizza ingredients. The infrared thermometer is especially nice in making sure the stone is hot enough to cook on, and the pizza peel is a must-have.

Ease of use

The oven virtually requires no assembly or no tools. After unboxing, I added the two-piece pizza stone and attached the gas, and was ready to go in minutes.

I placed the oven onto my outdoor countertop, and even though the oven was hot on the inside, it was pretty cool to the touch on the outside, which made the overall experience feel safer.

Firing up the oven only takes one click from the temperature knob, and then you leave it on high to preheat. When using the propane attachment on its highest setting, the pizza stone reached 650°F within 10 minutes and almost 800°F at the 20-minute mark.

The Solo Stove Pi claims it can reach temperatures up to 900°F using propane. This allows for a gas-fired, brick oven-style pizza that is crispy on the outside and perfectly cooked on the inside.

Cooking on the Solo Stove Pi Pizza Oven

I tested three pizzas in this oven. Two were freshly made pepperoni pizzas, and one was a frozen pre-made pizza (don’t judge me!)

With the heat on high, I could cook the first pizza in under 2 minutes. The only drawback to cooking this fast is that the edges of the crust burned a little.

It is crucial to rotate the pizza a few times during the cooking as most of the heat is coming from the very back of the oven. It was still a good pizza, though.

On my second pizza, I preheated the oven and then turned down the heat to medium before cooking the actual pizza. The pizza was nice and golden brown on the edges and only took 3-4 minutes to finish. The bottom of the crust was surprisingly crispy, and overall I was really happy with the results.

The frozen pizza also cooked evenly and took about 5 minutes on medium. I didn’t get a great cheese melt, but it was still delicious, and I was happy to see I could get much faster and better results than my oven.

Cleaning and maintenance

The Solo Stove Pi is relatively easy to clean and maintain. The stainless steel construction makes it easy to wipe down using warm soapy water and a lint-free towel.

The sticky bits on the inside can be cleaned the same way you would use a self-cleaning oven, which is to fire it up on high heat to burn off any crumbs or residue. Once the oven has cooled you can wipe down any leftover debris with a dampened cloth.

Warranty

Solo Stove Pi has a lifetime warranty. Solo Stove will replace your oven if there are any manufacturing defects. There is also free standard shipping and free 30-day returns or any order shipped to the lower 48 states.

Should you buy the Solo Stove Pi Pizza Oven?

Overall, the Solo Stove Pi is a fantastic portable, gas-fired pizza oven that is perfect for anyone who loves pizza and wants to take their experience to the next level. Its compact and portable design, ease of use, high-temperature capability, and temperature control make it perfect for any get-together or family meal.

The Solo Stove Pi is a no-fuss oven which is just the type I’m looking for. It’s basic but gets the job done every time. If I want to tinker around more, I still have the wood-burning option, which is nice.

The only major negative with the Pi is the price. For the base package, which just includes the oven and a stone, you are paying significantly more than the Ooni Karu, which also includes wood or gas.

The Pi does seem to get heavily discounted quite often, which makes the price more competitive. At the full price, I would rather go for the Gozney Roccbox (see review), or the Ooni Karu. Check out our guide to the best pizza ovens for more comparisons.
